Tula Talks: The Kickback

Nov 30. I did something amazing. Yup, I had the opportunity to tap into the world of hosting live events thanks to SyceGame. The company’s founder Bronson asked me have I ever host a live event before? I said no but I am sure I could make it happen. Before agreeing I got the details of my duties and determined I can handle it.
The Kickback, powered by Rebirth was held at the Sports Zone in Georgetown. This was a live showcase event with performances from Kyonte, Prince Akeem, Visto and Super Nike Nando.
I will admit I was a little nervous because it was my first time hosting an event like this, but that quickly went away once I met the artists, and welcomed everyone.
This was also my first time working with my new videographer Vincent!
Kyonte opened the show by serenading the crowd with his rendition of Mario’s You Should Let Me Love You, Drake’s Where Going Home, and original songs off his project Rendezvous. His urban alternative music left the crowd wanting more, literally, they demanded an encore. I must admit I wanted to hear more as well. His smooth voice and stage presence was a treat for R&B lovers like myself. I actually let my friends view the video before I released it and they all asked where they can find that song in the beginning. Now worries you guys all music links are at the bottom of this post.
There was a shift in the atmosphere for the rest of the performers. It was time to turn up! Prince Akeem’s melodic trap hop performance got the crowd on their feet and ready to dance. From the response of the crowd when he began to sing Afghanistan, you would have thought it was on the radio.
Up next was Visto of the Hippie Life Crew and his performance was everything he said it would be. He performs with a lot of energy and wants crowd interaction. He speaks his mind. If you are dry or not participating he will let you know, then will drop a beat and flow that will make your head nod so hard you have no choice but to get up and dance. He forces you to stop trying to be cool and join in. If you know me, you all know how I feel about smoking. I absolutely hate it and it’s a health risk so I don’t really relate to songs that talk about it too much. Which is why I commend Visto, because although his music is geared for a Hippie based audience, he has made little ‘ol me a fan of his musical skills as an artist despite that fact that I can’t fully relate to the lyrics…if that makes sense.
Last but certainly not least was Super Nike Nando! The crowd response and participation was present which made me wonder where have I’ve been hiding? Why didn’t I know about him and this movement he is making?Actually as I am writing this I am wondering what rock have I been under because I didn’t know about any of these artist.
I am glad Syce Game invited me to host this event because it has opened my eyes to the talent the DMV truly has. I’ve said it before and I will say it again…Miguel, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, and Jay – Z better watch out because the DMV definitely has lethal talent waiting to blow up! I enjoyed this experience; met some wonderful people and I can’t wait to do more events like this. This is just the beginning so be sure to follow me on twitter, IG and Facebook because You Don’t Want To Miss A Beat When TulaTalks!
